Vanuatu Supreme Court to supervise Santo vote re-count

9:40 pm on 27 November 2012

The re-count of the vote in Santo Rural constituency, following Vanuatu's general election four weeks ago, is to be conducted under the supervision of the Supreme Court.

The deadline for electoral petitions from the Election has today passed.

The chairman of Vanuatu's Electoral Commission, John Taleo says that the only case of electoral dispute which has been registered with the Supreme Court, resulting in an instruction to him, concerns Santo Rural.

He says the Supreme court has instructed him that the vote re-count must be attended by the Chief Justice.

"I'm just waiting for the Supreme Court to give me instruction then we'll have to go there to recount one of the polling stations, it was between two of the candidates, one got 673 votes, the other got 671, so it was really close."
