Region calls for second commitment period at Doha climate talks

Pacific Island Countries are calling for a second five-year commitment period under the Kyoto Protocol.

Representatives are taking part in talks in Doha in Qatar as the first stage of the international agreement to reduce greenhouse gases runs out at the end of this year.

Pacific Island countries have been forming strategies as part of the Alliance of Small Island States.

The Solomon Islands UN representative Colin Beck says the key to survival in the Pacific is an ambitious reduction in greenhouse gas emissions.

He says the problem is beyond the Pacific to address.

The Kyoto Protocol allows for a second commitment period from the first of January to help control greenhouse gas emissions.
