Tonga asks for more American help to train its soldiers

Tonga has asked the United States Defence Force to provide it with more training opportunities for its soldiers.

A Fiji based US Navy commander, Scott Sherard is in Nuku'alofa to meet Brigadier General Tau'aika 'Uta'atu to look at additional opportunities for Tongan soldiers.

Radio Tonga reports the discussions focused on the International Military Education & Training Program, or IMET, which is funded by the US Defense Force.

30 Tongan military personnel has so far this year had overseas training courtesy of IMET.
