Four Pacific countries oppose Palestinian vote at UN

8:24 am on 1 December 2012

Four Pacific countries are among only nine in the world to vote against Palestine being recognized at the UN.

The 193-nation General Assembly overwhelmingly approved a resolution to upgrade the Palestinian Authority's observer status at the UN from entity to non-member state, implicitly recognizing a Palestinian state.

There were 138 votes in favor, nine against and 41 abstentions.

Nauru, Palau, the Marshall Islands and the Federated States of Micronesia all voted against the resolution.

Several other Pacific countries abstained.

New Zealand vote for it.
