2:31 pm on 4 December 2012

Members of the separatist Free Papua Movement were involved in a one-hour shootout with security personnel in the Pirime district of Lanny Jaya regency in Indonesia's Papua region yesterday.

The Jakarta Post reports the local OPM leader Purom Okiman Wenda saying hundreds of the movement's members had besieged the capital, Tiom, to fight for the separation of Papua from Indonesia.

Papua's police spokesperson says the number of casualties is unknown.

The paper says Mr Wenda's group was also involved in last week's killing of 3 police personnel in the district.
