Five police officers in Papua New Guinea are being sought for their alleged involvement in the burning of ballot boxes from the Jiwaka provincial seat in Banz in September.

The Post Courier reports the Highlands police chief, Teddy Tei, saying one policeman was arrested at the weekend and charged with burning ballot boxes armed robbery and other offences on September the 21st.

The officers have been on the run since the 18th of September.

The alleged role by the police in the destruction of the ballot boxes has not been revealed but it is known more than 10 armed people, dressed in Ninja style clothing, were involved.

Seven local people were arrested last week over the arson.
