Australia's foreign minister Bob Carr says Papua New Guinea has no better or older friend than Australia.
Mr Carr, who is on a four day trip to PNG, made the comments to a crowd of about 1000 people in Wapenamanda in Enga Province.
Mr Carr says the relationship between the two countries is changing.
He says Australia and PNG are working together in RAMSI, on Fiji and on people smuggling.
Mr Carr says the future holds great promise for PNG and no other country wants it to prosper more than Australia.
