ADB says small Pacific Islands can boost economies through jobs in ICT

The Asian Development Bank says small Pacific Island countries must rely on the private sector to generate jobs in information communications technology or ICT.

The latest issue of the ADB's Pacific Economic Monitor suggests the smallest Pacific Island countries can boost their economies by improving ICT and expanding economic links.

The ADB's Principal Economist in the Pacific Department, Emma Veve, says the ADB is helping these countries to advance ICT, which it believes will lead to better business deals and job creation.

"In the Pacific if we're looking for new jobs to be generated, it's going to be really reliant on the private sector growing. What ADB's been doing in the Pacific is connecting Pacific countries to outside the region through submarine fibre optic cables. This improves their internet speeds, their telecommunications systems and gives them potential to create better links to the outside world."
