The French overseas territories minister, Victorin Lurel, has decided to visit Wallis and Futuna in the aftermath of Cyclone Evan.

The French High Commission in New Caledonia says the minister is due in Noumea tonight and will be on Wallis tomorrow and Thursday to see what help the national and local authorities can provide to deal with the damage.

A statement says the visit is also aimed at showing French national solidarity with the citizens in Wallis.

The storm caused serious material damage on mainly Wallis at the weekend.
