New Caledonia Congress debates no confidence motion

2:19 pm on 21 December 2012

New Caledonia's Congress is debating a motion of no-confidence lodged this week by the Caledonia Together Party in a bid to oust the administration of Harold Martin.

It is the first such motion since the 1998 Noumea Accord set up a collegial government for the French territory.

The motion has been read out by the Caledonia Together leader, Philippe Gomes, who has accused the coalition government of having accomplished nothing to curb the high cost of living.

In reply, Mr Gomes has been rebuffed over his claim that there has been no respect of the system of collegial government.

It appears unlikely that the motion will be approved.
