11:29 am on 30 December 2012

Gale force winds and rain continue to batter Solomon Islands, as tropical cyclone Freda moves slowly across the country.

The cyclone, which has been upgraded to a category three, has damaged homes and uprooted trees, with the southern islands of Rennell and Makira taking the worst battering.

The Solomon Islands Meteorological service says there are gale force winds of up to 100 kilometres an hour, with gusts of up to 148 kilometres an hour.

However, so far there are no reports of deaths or injuries.

The cyclone is expected to move off the country by late Sunday night or Monday morning.

In New Caledonia, the metservice has issued what it calls a pre-alert for Cyclone Freda.

It says the system, with gusts of up to 195 kilometres an hour close to its centre, is moving south at about 10 kilometres an hour.

Early this morning, it was about 800 kilometres off the northern island of Belep and shoul be to its west by Tuesday night.
