Freda weakens as it crosses north of New Caledonia

4:39 am on 3 January 2013

The remnants of Cyclone Freda have been crossing the north of New Caledonia.

The system has weakened sharply but is still expected to bring heavy rain as it passes along the eastern coast of the main island.

The orange alert in place for the northern island of Belep has been cancelled.

The depression is moving between the main island and the Loyalty Islands but by Friday, it should be well clear of New Caledonia.
