A sailor on the Samoa Government vessel, Lady Naomi, has been charged with rape, deviate sexual assault, first-degree sexual abuse and endangering the welfare of a child.

Feagaiga Si'ilata, who appeared Court on Tuesday, is accused of raping a 15-year-old girl who was a passenger on the vessel's trip from Samoa to American Samoa last Thursday.

The government says Si'ilata had confirmed what the girl had told authorities.

Si'ilata is in police custody, and is looking at 18 years in jail if convicted of all four counts.
