The director of Fiji's National Disaster Management Office says the department of public works has assumed responsibility for the rehabilitation of schools following Cyclone Evan.
FBC reports that the interim government has allocated about 700-thousand US dollars for the rehabilitation work on schools in the Western Division.
The Commissioner Western says the storm damaged or destroyed 86 schools in Lautoka, Nadi and Yasawa, affecting more than 29,000 students.
The NDMO's Manasa Tagicakibau says all schools will be ready for start of the school year in less than a fortnight despite the fact that there are 14 schools needing completely new buildings.
"Most of these are primary schools, just one or two buildings per school, or three buildings to the most. But they will also build a temporary shelter concurrently for the school to go ahead."
Manasa Tagicakibau says the new facilities will be built to the government standard.
