OIA not authorised to conduct American Samoa Government financial audit

6:42 pm on 10 January 2013

The American Samoa Government has been told it is not authorised to conduct the type of comprehensive financial audit requested by the Governor.

Shortly after his appointment, Governor Lolo Matalasi Moliga wrote to the United States Department of Interior's Office of Insular Affairs or OIA, requesting a comprehensive audit of the American Samoa Government's finances.

The Acting Deputy Assistant Secretary for Insular Areas, Eileen Sobeck, told Governor Lolo in writing that she agrees government leaders must have comprehensive, timely and accurate financial information available.

However, she says the OIA is not authorised to conduct the type of audit the governor has asked for and has advised Governor Lolo to discuss the request with the Office of the Inspector General.
