The New Caledonian government has adjusted the minimum wages.
The general minimum wage is now 10 US dollars an hour or 1,690 US dollars a month.
The minimum wage in the agricultural sector is now set at eight US dollar and 50 cents, bring the monthly total to 1,435 dollars.
The calculation is based on a working month of 169 hours.
The increase comes amid widespread public concern at the high cost of living, which for a number of reasons is far higher than in mainland France.
