Forecasters are keeping a close eye on a tropical depression near Tonga that is likely to become a cyclone in the next 18 to 24 hours.

This morning the system is 290 kilometers west north west of Vavau moving east south east.

Tongan Metservice's Duty forecaster, Moleni Tuuholoaki, says it should pass close to two island groups tonight.

"Right now, we are monitoring the system and giving alert to only Vaavau and Haapai group. The associated convergence zone are also areas we are looking at with this system they may generate damaging gale winds over the whole of Tonga, most likely tomorrow morning."
