Fiji's National Disaster Management Office says it wasn't able to rebuild all the schools severely damaged by tropical cyclone Evan in time for the start of the school year today.
The cyclone, which hit over a month ago, caused damage to 137 schools around Fiji.
The director of the National Disaster Management office says teams of builders and engineers were hoping to be able to finish some schools before the term started.
Manasa Tagicakibau says temporary shelters will up in most schools in the Yasawa group, and a few in the Western divsion, the Lautoka area.
He also says UNICEF has stepped in to help with shelters.
"Grateful to UNICEF offering their assistance in terms of provision of tents, 20 to 40 men tents, this will also erected to house school children for school to start while rebuilding and repair work are being done to the property."
