The leader of the Fiji Labour Party says the interim government's political parties decree is a deliberate attempt to wipe out all political parties before a new constitution is promulgated.
Under the decree, existing political parties have been given just under a month to register 5,000 members from across Fiji by the middle of February and politicians must disclose their personal finances.
Mahendra Chaudhry says the decree is a direct attack on existing parties and has been carefully planned to remove any opposition to the regime.
"Now they want to rush this decree before the constitution comes out so that any freedom that may subsequently be enshrined in the constitution in regards to political associations and all that, or they've been dealt with by this decree, which would virtually wipe out all existing political parties before the constitution in promulgated."
Mahendra Chaudhry says it appears the regime is heading in a direction where there may be no election in 2014 or it will be too difficult for parties or independents to contest it.
