Public schools in the Manua's group of islands in American Samoa will remain closed for a second day today.
The acting director of education Dr Salu Hunkin Finau has decided not to resume classes in the elementary and one high school in Manu'a because the weather is still unstable as a result of tropical cyclone Garry.
Manu'a has four elementary schools and one high school.
The government's Emergency Operations Center says reports from Manu'a say winds have dropped in the last few hours and the high surf has subsided below hazardous conditions.
However, Manu'a is not yet in the clear.
The National Weather Service will continue to monitor the movement of Garry for the next several hours before they make a determination on whether the island is out of the woods from the effects of the cyclone.
Public schools on Tutuila and Aunuu island, which were closed yesterday, will resume today.
