Solomon Islands doctors could work in Fiji

7:10 pm on 24 January 2013

The Fiji Foreign minister Ratu Inoke Kubuabola has told the Solomon Islands Prime Minister that Fiji could offer jobs to Solomon Islands doctors.

Mr Kubuabola has told Gordon Darcy Lilo that Solomon Islands doctors could be engaged in Fiji to meet its shortfall of doctors.

Mr Kubuabola says Fiji's interim government can pay the basic salaries of the doctors and it will seek support from Australia to meet other conditions of service.

The Solomon Islands foreign minister Clay Forau says the offer is great news for Solomon Islands but his government will wait for a formal request from the Fiji government.

Mr Forau says the offer is a relief for Solomon Islanders studying medicine in Cuba who are worried about whether they will have jobs when they return home.
