The Fiji met service says the Southern Cook Islands should now be feeling the effects of tropical cyclone Garry.

The Category three system has been moving in easterly direction towards Aitutaki.

A tropical cyclone alert in is force for the Southern group and a gale wind warning is in force for the rest of the Cook Islands.

A senior forecaster, Terry Atalifo, says tropical cyclone Garry is very near the Southern group.

"According to our current track, it just goes over waters but the storm winds and the gale winds associated this system will affect most of the islands in the Southern Cooks."

Terry Atalifo says the further south Garry moves the more it should weaken.
