Samoan man in court for killing New Zealander in jail

2:00 pm on 29 January 2013

A 21-year-old man in Samoa serving a life sentence for murder has appeared in the Supreme Court in Apia charged with murdering a New Zealand man.

The man, Hans Dalton, died in prison on Boxing Day.

Mr Dalton, who suffered from poor mental health, had been transferred to prison because police had nowhere to restrain him when he became violent.

The accused, Jonathan Patrick Crichton of Malifa, was before the chief judge for a pre-trial hearing.

However, his lawyer did not turn up and the case has been adjourned until next month.

The defendant has not entered a plea yet.

Last week, Crichton was sentenced to life in prison for killing a taxi driver at gun point last year.
