American Samoa's governor keen for bottom fishing in Marine Sanctuary

The American Samoa Governor has asked the United States Department of Commerce to allow bottom fishing in a part of the territory's National Marine Sanctuary.

Lolo Matalasi Moliga wants one of two sites in Aunu'u, known as Zone B to be open to bottom fishing.

The site is a research area which currently permits surface fishing and trolling.

According to Talanei.com, Governor Lolo says the area is a primary fishing ground for local bottom-fish fishermen.

He contends there is no scientific justification for the prohibition of bottom-fish fishing in Zone B.
