American Samoa's governor keen to keep Hawai'i office open

11:33 am on 31 January 2013

American Samoa's Governor is keeping the American Samoa Government's office in Hawai'i open and has appointed Afimutasi Gus Hannemann as the new director.

Afimutasi had been the caretaker of the office since the Lolo administration took over the helm of government on the 3rd of January.

The usefulness of the office was questioned by lawmakers last September, saying that they see no need to add another expenditure to the government's annual budget.

Lolo Matalasi Moliga had also sought out the need to keep this office open, and the reason he appointed only a caretaker from the beginning.

But he has now outlined that the office is a liaison for Samoan communities and individuals requiring assistance from the City and County of Honolulu as well as the state of Hawaii.

The office will also collaborate with the LBJ Medical Center in the territory in rendering assistance to patients referred from American Samoa to medical centre in Hawai'i.
