Prison inmates in Vanuatu help build new classroom for nurses

7:34 pm on 4 February 2013

In Vanuatu more and more low-risk inmates at the country's Correctional Centres are taking up trade training programmes.

The Vanuatu Mobile Force says 15 low-risk detainees have recently helped to build a new classroom for trainee nurses in Port Vila.

The building was funded by the Australian government and its construction overseen by Vanuatu Mobile Force engineers and their counterparts from the Australian and New Zealand Defence Forces.

The inmates received training in block laying, furniture making, plastering and other relevant skills.

They will be presented with certificates to help them find jobs when they return to their communities.
