CNMI Governor Benigno Fitial impeached on felony charge

4:03 pm on 11 February 2013

The House of Representatives in the Northern Marianas has impeached the Governor, Benigno Fitial, on a felony charge.

This relates to the unauthorised release of a federal inmate to allegedly massage the governor at his private residence in January three years ago.

It is the first time in CNMI history that a governor has been impeached.

The vote in the House was 16 to four, more than the two-thirds backing needed.

17 more articles of impeachment are being voted on this afternoon.

The impeachment resolution is expected to move to the Senate tomorrow.
