Locals on Temotu in Solomons struggling to feed families

7:46 am on 12 February 2013

Residents still living in the Temotu Provincial Capital of Lata in Solomon Islands are struggling to feed families, with shops and businesses closed since last week's quake and tsunami.

Aftershocks continue to be felt after the 8 magnitude quake, which generated a tsunami that killed at least 10 people and injured many others.

As a result many people in and around Lata have fled to higher ground.

The Premier of Temotu, Father Charles Brown Beu, says while business owners have the right to close if they want, many locals who haven't fled are left with no one to supply them with goods.

"So for those of us, who have not lost their homes or anything else, are also finding it difficult because we cannot have access to the bank, and we cannot buy any food because the shops are closed and we can't find any supply from the vegetable market."

Premier Father Charles Brown Beu says many locals are eating whatever they can find in their own gardens, and food rations, to survive.
