Papua New Guinea police say they saved two elderly women from being burnt alive in Mt Hagen, the same town where a woman was thrown into a fire and burnt last week.

20-year-old mother, Kepari Lanieta, was tortured and killed after being accused of using sorcery to kill a young boy.

Police say the two women in this recent case were also accused of using sorcery to kill an 8 year-old girl, who was killed last month after being gang-raped by two known suspects who have since been arrested

The Highlands Divisional Commander Teddy Tei told the National newspaper the women were saved by officers who arrived after receiving a tip-off from a witness to the attack.

Mr Tei says relatives of the dead girl had hired a man claiming to possess supernatural powers, commonly known as a 'glassman' who identified the two women as sorcerers and blamed them for the killing.
