Sport: Fiji depart for Indian challenge

11:20 am on 14 February 2013

Match practice has been in short supply but, for the Fiji men's and women's hockey teams, just getting on the plane is something of an achievement.

Both national squad's fly out to India on Thursday to take part in the Second Round of the World League tournament in Delhi.

They qualified by winning their respective tournaments in Suva in December.

Men's coach Hector Smith says they haven't been able to play any warm-up matches and for a long time weren't even sure they would be able to afford to travel to India.

But he says there's no point dwelling on the negatives.

"Our main focus is to perform. We're representing all the Island nations back here and we've been trying for competition, I think we're having some top level games and it will be a good gauge for us but it's been a difficult process, in all fairness to the players. You're trying to get fit, you're trying to rest and you're trying to raise funds - it's a battle but good things don't come easy so we've set out minds to it and what we don't need we will do without and hopefully it will pay off in the end."
