PNG opposition fails to get temporary ban on Manus Island transfers

A Papua New Guinea court has rejected an application for a temporary ban on Australia sending more asylum seekers to the detention camp it has established on Manus Island.

However Justice David Canning has ruled lawyers for the opposition leader Belden Namah be granted permission to visit the centre to interview detainees to see if they require legal assistance.

The PNG Government had previously denied them access to the island.

The opposition asserts that the agreement with Australia to detain the asylum seekers on the island is illegal under PNG law.
