The American Samoa government has been awarded a multi-million dollar grant to repair roads damaged by the 2009 tsunami.

The government will receive the 3.7 million US dollar grant from the United States Department of Transportation under the Emergency Relief Programme.

The American Samoa congressman Faleomavaega Eni Hunkin says the grant is needed for the reconstruction of damaged roads and to build new highways and roads.

He says roads are a critical component of local infrastructure and the funding will provide great assistance to the many areas affected by the tsunami.
