American Samoa's LBJ Hospital is looking at establishing a charitable foundation to help counter its persistent financial problems over the last few years.
The hospital's board chairwoman, Tofoitaufa Sandra King Young, revealed this when she accepted a digital mammography and biopsy machine from the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints.
Tofoitaufa says the board has approved a motion to set up a charitable foundation to help raise funds for the territory's only hospital.
"So that we ourselves as a people take responsibility for helping to build resources so that we can help ourselves. So we hope that in the next few weeks as we proceed with the establishing of the charitable foundation for the hospital, that this is the beginning of a journey."
Tofoitaufa says the hospital also hopes to strengthen its relationship with the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints.
