Fiji has signed a commitment to a United Nations inititative to end violence against women.

A recent survey by the Fiji Women's Crisis Centre found that 64 percent of women have experienced either physical or sexual violence in their lifetime.

UN Women is calling on Governments everywhere to COMMIT to end violence against women and girls.

The Fiji Times reports the Social Welfare, Women and Poverty Alleviation Minister, Dr Jiko Luveni, as saying the country has the political will and commitment to address the root causes of violence.

She said there were some decrees in place to protect women and children in Fiji.

Papua New Guinea has also made a commitment to UN Women.
