Forum Secretariat officer given 24 hours to leave Fiji

The news agency PacNews reports that a senior officer at the Pacific Islands Forum Secretariat has been given 24 hours to leave Fiji for breaching a work visa.

The agency reports that the officers, whose work contracts expired last year, were still engaged by the Suva Secretariat, without visa exemption and work permit clearance from Fiji.

PacNews was told one of them pursued a Masters programme at the University of the South Pacific in clear breach of his permit.

The Forum Secretariat says it is liaising with Fiji's Ministry of Foreign Affairs to address issues relating to work permit and visa exemptions.

The Forum Secretariat says in adhering to Fiji's laws as well as its own legal responsibilities as an international organisation, the staff members have ceased all work-related activities while awaiting ministry clearance.
