Vanuatu Christian Council calls on UN to visit Papua region

11:42 am on 14 March 2013

The Chairman of the Vanuatu Christian Council says the Pacific Council of Churches has passed a resolution for the World Council of Churches to pressure the United Nations to send a UN Monitoring Team to Indonesia's Papua region.

Vanuatu's Anglican Bishop James Ligo says the aim of the team should be to gather investigate allegations of killings of Melanesians by the Indonesian military in Papua.

Bishop Ligo who has just attended the PCC Tenth General Assembly in Honiara in the Solomons says West Papuans as a people have a right to be granted observer status at MSG, to be followed later on with full membership of MSG.

The Bishop says Indonesia is also a part of the wider Pacific but that the process followed to grant it observer status at MSG in 2011 was not transparent.
