Tahiti teacher strike threat sparks political row

8:48 am on 15 March 2013

A row has erupted in French Polynesia amid a threatened teacher's strike which has now been called off.

The opposition A Tia Porinetia says it is scandalous that the education minister, Tauhiti Nena, accused some teachers of just wanting to get fatter.

The party says this is an insult to people who struggle with obesity.

It says Mr Nena should lend an ear instead of pointing the finger.

Rolls at Tahiti schools have been falling and 40 teaching positions are set to be cut.

The teachers union is opposed but has now withdrawn its threat to go on strike from today.
