Fiji weekend rape sentence for police inspector appealed

6:24 pm on 18 March 2013

Fiji's Director of Public Prosecutions, Christopher Pryde, says his office has appealed a sentence which jails a rapist at weekends only.

The case concerns a 33 year old special police inspector who raped his 22 year old sister.

He was sentenced to eight years in prison by the Nasinu magistrate's court but it also ruled that he would be free from Sunday night until Friday night.

The Fijivillage website says a four-year prison sentence given to a man for raping his daughter will also be appealed by the prosecution after a 38 year old man asked for a lenient sentence for raping his 16 year old daughter.
