In a major coup, the Australian rugby league legend Mal Meninga has joined Papua New Guinea's coaching staff ahead of this year's World Cup.

The Queensland coach has signed a five-year deal to become performance director for the Kumuls, who have been drawn alongside the defending champions New Zealand, Samoa and France in the World Cup, which will be held in Britain and France in October and November.

The 52-year-old will work alongside PNG coach Adrian Lam and says he's looking forward to turning the raw talent of PNG's top players into a professional team.

Meninga has a long association with Papua New Guinea and has coached the Australian Prime Minister's XIII in its annual clash with the Kumuls since 2006.
