Size of forces can not be reduced - Fiji military head

Fiji's land forces commander says the size of the military can only be increased, not decreased.

Colonel Mosese Tikoitoga was responding to comments in research conducted by the Pacific Theological College's, which found that a number of Fijians want the size of the military to be downsized.

FijiLive reports Colonel Tikoitoga saying the size of the RFMF corresponds with its role in Fiji and its obligation as a good international citizen.

He says the Australia and New Zealand defence forces are more internal focused, and have limited deployment capability for the UN and other peace keeping initiatives.

Colonel Tikoitoga says Australia and New Zealand do not have the political will nor the human resource capability to be able to meet international obligations for peace keeping, but Fiji has been doing it continuously since 1978.
