Sport: Fiji captain says team can win in Hong Kong without Cakau

Fiji captain Nemani Nagusa admits that defending the Hong Kong Sevens title will be a tall order this weekend.

After missing the quarter finals in Wellington last month, the Pacific giants bounced back in Las Vegas with a credible fourth placed finish.

Team preparations took a blow however with the withdrawal of captain and talisman Setefano Cakau with a knee injury.

Nagusa takes the captains armband from Cakau and says they will do their best in his absence.

"He's always been a really big rolemodel for me but him not being here, we can't do much about it. I have a pretty good bunch of boys who can do the job - I believe in them that we can do it."

Meanwhile it's not just the big guns in action.

Alongside the main event is a 12-team qualifier, from which the top four countries will advance to a final event in London in May, for the right to be a core team on next year's World Series.

Tonga fell short in the same quest last year and coach Etaute Waqa is expecting another dogfight.

We know that we have got a very tough pool with us. Tough because we don't really know the teams we are playing against - we know that Tunisia is there, Chinese Taipei and of course Uruguay have always been playing very well in the last couple of years. The teams that are coming in for qualifying now are all strong because they are all building up for the Olympics also, and the World Cup is just around the corner, and we know that it is not going to be easy for us.

The Cook Islands are competing in the qualifier for the first time and coach Ramsey Tomokino admits they're up against it.

I've got no doubt it my mind that, apart from Chinese Taipei, we're probably the smallest team here. That's just being brutally honest but we've done enough preparation if we're going to have a shot at it. We've done all we can within our means and within the players that we have. We haven't come here with our best team - we've got a few injuries and unavailabilities - because of work commitments and so-forth, so we've just got to face it with the guys that are here and hope that we've done enough and we will know more on Sunday.
