Citizens Constitutional Forum will take critical look at draft constitution

12:04 pm on 23 March 2013

The head of Fiji's Citizens Constitutional Forum says it intends to air the public's views in the Professor Yash Ghai's draft constitution and make submissions based on that.

The Forum's statement follows the release of the government's draft constitution and an invitation for the public to give its opinions on it directly to the regime over the next two weeks.

The government also announced there will be no Constituent Assembly, which the Chief Executive Officer of the Citizens Constitutional Forum says is out of line with the prime minister's initial plans on the timeline and process of the constitution.

The Reverend Akuila Yabaki says it will examine the new draft constitution.

"We're going to look at the people's draft, that's what we are working on. And we'll make proposals based on that, as a response to the government's call within the short time available. We'll have a critical look at it and we will try and champion what the views which are based on the people's draft."

The Reverend Akuila Yabaki says there is insufficient time for the public to give their feedback on the draft constitution.
