Pacific US territories could benefit from education funding

4:21 pm on 27 March 2013

American Samoa, Guam and CNMI will have access to more federal funding for education if a bill introduced by the Northern Marianas delegate to Congress, Gregorio Sablan is approved.

The bill would allow the Northern Mariana Islands Public School System and school districts in the U.S. Virgin Islands, Guam, and American Samoa to compete for Race to the Top and Investing in Innovation funding administered by the US Department of Education.

These two grants were originally set up under the State Fiscal Stabilization Fund in the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act of 2009.

But President Obama has recommended they continue in his annual budgets and Congress has kept providing the funds.
