An American human rights activist, Wendy Doromal, is calling on the U.S. Congress to provide permanent residency status and a pathway to U.S. citizenship for an estimated 12,000 legal, non-resident workers and others who have lived in the Northern Marianas for years.
Florida based Ms Doromal, who used to work in the CNMI, says it would be grossly unjust if the undocumented aliens in the U.S. mainland were to be granted a higher status or less years to obtain citizenship, than the CNMI legal, nonresidents are.
She also says any guest worker programme that lacks a pathway to citizenship is inhumane.
A bipartisan group in Congress and the Obama administration are looking at granting a pathway to citizenship to some 11 million undocumented aliens on the U.S. mainland.
