8:35 pm on 3 April 2013

There's an allegation that an official has been selling award letters to students who have been accepted into the new Solomon Islands National University, which opens this month.

The Ministry of Education and Human Resources Development is aware of the claim.

The ministry's permanent secretary Fred Rohorua, says the allegation involves an official from the National Training Unit and it's a serious matter as other students would be left disadvantaged.

"That students have been buying letters of award from the scholarships office. We'll look at our regulations and plan the appropriate ones, there will almost definitely yes be an investigation."

Fred Rohorua says if the accusation is true then they would aim to identify students involved and how much they've paid to receive a scholarship
