Fiji's former Prime Minister, Laisenia Qarase, says he is happy to be back home with his family and politics is far from his mind right now.

Mr Qarase was released from the Korovou Corrections Centre in Suva yesterday where he had served eight months of a 12-month prison sentence.

FBC news reports the former leader saying his time at Korovou was a learning experience.

He says he now plans to return to his village and catch up on some fishing.

Mr Qarase was found guilty on nine charges of abuse of office and failing to perform his duties as a public servant 20 years ago.

Suva High Court documents said he failed to disclose a private investment interest in 3 companies that he was helping to manage in an official capacity.
