Push for people in Fiji to have a say on constitution through a referendum

A founder of the United Front for a Democratic Fiji, former prime minister Mahendra Chaudhry, says there has to be a national referendum on the country's new constitution to ensure that it is accepted by the people.

The Front is holding meetings around Fiji to raise concerns about the regime's draft constitution which it says it completely rejects.

Mr Chaudhry says a meeting on Wednesday in Suva called for the draft constitution drawn up by Kenyan academic, Yash Ghai, to be re-instated.

He says the meeting also decided a fully representative Constituent Assembly must then be called after which the constitution should be put to the people in a referendum.

"The constitution must be accepted by the people. As you know we don't have a Parliament, so we are deprived of that process. Now the substitute to that would be - go directly to the people, seek their approval because we are talking about constitution, the national charter. So it is important it be approved by the people in the absence of the Parliament."
