The police in Tonga are investigating the brutal murder of a man in the Vava'u Group last night

The Police Commissioner, Grant O'Fee, says a 40-year-old man has been apprehended and they're trying to establish a motive.

He says the victim, a 22 year old, was in a public hall in Tu'anuku village, watching television.

"The offender came in, picked up the deceased's machete and struck him at least three times around the head causing fatal injuries. Although they are known to each other there's no suggestion that we know of yet of any argument. We're at a bit of a loss for a motive."

Grant O'Fee says they have a number of witnesses who were in the hall at the time.
