Solomons MP wants police to get training from Taiwanese counterparts

2:36 pm on 5 April 2013

A Solomon Islands Opposition MP, John Moffat Fugui, says Taiwan should be re-engaged to train the country's police officers.

He says police staff had received training in Taiwan in the 1980s and 1990s, especially on how to tackle transnational crime and riots.

Mr Fugui says the government should now negotiate a similar arrangement with Taipei.

He says since Solomon Islands has experienced ethnic warfare and devastating riots, police officers must be trained to be ready if such events happen again.

The MP says this training would supplement efforts by the Regional Assistance Mission to improve the capacity and capability of the Royal Solomon Islands Police Force.
