Qarase says prison a learning experience

The ousted Fiji prime minister who has just been released from prison has described his time there as a learning experience.

Laisenia Qarase was let out on Wednesday serving eight months of a year-long sentence after being convicted on fraud charges.

Mr Qarase says he was able to follow Fiji's political developments from jail and he says it was a pity his own party, the SDL, had to fold.

"I don't see the sense of it. I don't see the real purpose behind it. It doesn't do any useful thing except that you waste a lot of time and waste a lot of money doing it but that is what the government wants and we are trying to comply with that."

Laisenia Qarase says he was able to mix freely with inmates and learnt much about managing his time and diet.
